We were sad to hear of the recent passing of the distinguished Professor Ronald (Ron) D. Schultz, past Chair of the Department of Pathobiological Sciences at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Wisconsin, USA. Among his many achievements, Dr Schultz was a founding member of WSAVA’s Vaccination Guidelines Group and co-author of the WSAVA’s first three sets of Global Vaccination Guidelines for Dogs and Cats. These Guidelines have been globally influential and are among our most frequently downloaded resources. An update has just been published in the Journal of Small Animal Practice.
Dr Schultz was kind and fun-loving with a ready laugh. He was exceptionally good at simplifying complex subjects for diverse audiences. He was passionate about animals from his childhood. In their lovely tribute, his family explain that, as a boy, he would collect losing roosters from cock fights and nurse them back to health. That small boy went on to make ground-breaking scientific discoveries about viral diseases and immune responses that still influence our thinking today. We are deeply grateful for Dr Schultz’s life-long commitment to animal health and welfare and, of course, for his important contributions, over more than a decade, to the WSAVA. We keep his family, friends and colleagues in our thoughts at this sad time.
