Sharing new knowledge and practical skills with colleagues from South East Asia... This year’s Hill’s-WSAVA Outreach Project at WSAVA World Congress took the form of a pre-congress lecture day at the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA), Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It took place on September 22 2018. Dr Brian Loon BSc BVMS (Hons) (Murdoch), CVA (IVAS) organized the event. He says:
“We had 200 participants at the lecture series in the morning. They were mainly students from the Bachelor of Animal Science and DVM programmes and they gained a valuable insight into surgical, anaesthesia and analgesia techniques and skills from Dr Wijit Sutthiprapa, Assistant Director and Attending Clinician, Kasetsart University Veterinary Hospital (KUVH), Bangkok, Thailand, assisted by his colleague Dr Nithida Boonwithaya, Surgeon at KUVH.
“In the afternoon, around 50 participants attended a practical workshop, during which they practised their skills in skin suturing, gastrointestinal surgery and local/regional anaesthesia. This workshop was led by Dr Wijit and assisted by Dr Nithida, me and several teaching staff from RUA.
“As part of the outreach, 16 sets of surgical instruments were purchased and donated to RUA to continue to use after the workshop, which has significantly improved the scope of surgical instrumentation available at their facility.”
Dr Loon adds: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Hill’s Pet Nutrition for its generous support of this outreach program. The participants and RUA faculty members were excited and fully engaged in the day’s program, especially as it was the first veterinary continuing education program of this calibre and scale ever held in at the RUA and Phnom Penh.”
