Emma van Rooijen joined the WSAVA in January 2018 as Administrative Assistant. In this role, she supports WSAVA CEO Arpita Bhose and the WSAVA Executive Board.
I qualified with a Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Science from the University of Utrecht in 2016 and am now completing a Master’s Degree in Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. I am a Past President of the International Veterinary Students Association (IVSA) and, during my time as president, I helped to develop strong links between IVSA and the WSAVA. I look forward to them continuing to grow!
Could you introduce yourself to members?
You played key roles at IVSA while you were training to become a veterinarian. What did you enjoy and what did you learn?
I served on the Executive Committee of IVSA for two years as President and later as Secretary General. I’m still involved in its Standing Committee on Wellness. IVSA enabled me to explore the different career paths possible in veterinary medicine and helped me to discover my passion for international animal welfare education and research. In fact, being part of the global community of veterinary students inspired me to pursue a career in organizational medicine. The single best thing about my years in IVSA was the opportunity it gave me to get to know so many different people from different backgrounds - all just as welcoming and interesting.
I support Arpita and the WSAVA Executive Board. My responsibilities include managing meetings, ensuring membership protocols are followed, managing general assembly procedures during World Congress and carrying out other administrative and marketing-related activities. The WSAVA is the perfect fit for me and I’m really excited to have joined the team.
What does your new role at the WSAVA involve?
What do you enjoy doing outside work?
I enjoy different types of sports and I seem to rotate them. Right now, I've picked up boxing and dance. I've always played piano and I like to sing as well. And, of course, I enjoy spending some much- needed quality time with my friends and family.
