The veterinary profession has lost a global leader... We were greatly saddened to hear of the recent passing of Dr René Carlson. We knew her well and met her regularly at global veterinary events at which her contributions were always forward-looking and thought-provoking. At both the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the World Veterinary Association (WVA) she proved a visionary leader, willing to make bold decisions and guiding both associations effectively during periods of rapid change in the sector. Her passion for the veterinary profession globally was clear to all who knew her and led her to spearhead a move by the AVMA to play a stronger role on the world stage, providing a new level of leadership and support to veterinarians around the world. She brought a similar vigour to her presidency of the WVA.
While she enjoyed helping to develop the profession globally, René never forgot her roots and was equally at home working in practice at home in Wisconsin, USA. Her devoted husband, Mark, supported her throughout her career and during her illness. We send him our heartfelt condolences at this sad time. The veterinary profession has lost a one of its greats but her legacy will live on.
