A message from WSAVA President, Dr Walt Ingwersen

Published: 2/6/2018

Dear colleagues, friends and members of the WSAVA global community... Thank you for helping to make 2017 one of our most productive years to date. We welcomed four new members and saw two others move to full membership status. This brings our community to 105 associations, representing more than 200,000 members of the veterinary healthcare team globally.

This global community was the focus of our Members’ Forum, hosted in Copenhagen as part of the Assembly meeting and WSAVA Congress. This set the groundwork for our soon-to-be launched online community that will enhance our new website and facilitate greater involvement from our members.

We also continued to implement the WSAVA 2014-2019 Strategic Plan (now close to 75% complete), progressing our prime association pillars of animal welfare, continuing education, One Health and guidelines/standards-of-care of global relevance. As part of this we were delighted to launch the WSAVA Global Dental Guidelines during WSAVA World Congress and it’s great to see that a variety of follow up CE initiatives are now in progress.

In addition, we embarked on organizational renewal through Secretariat expansion, including the promotion of Arpita Bhose to WSAVA CEO and restructured the Executive Board to ensure that each member can more fully focus on their leadership roles. Congratulations and a heart-felt thank you to all who have helped make these important accomplishments a reality!

These developments set the tone for 2018, which is shaping up to be one of our most ambitious ever, with the new website, a new Professional Wellness and Wellbeing Committee and a Veterinary Therapeutics Guidelines Group to focus on building equality of therapeutic access, proper use, and minimum veterinary pharmacy requirements.

We will also launch our Animal Welfare Guidelines and expand the scope of our community initiatives, including One Care, Members Forums and ‘Getting Them to Congress’. These activities will complement the continued and tireless work of our various Standing Committees and Guideline Committees, all of which have their own ambitious agendas.

The fuel for all of these initiatives is you, our volunteers and community members. If you are interested in taking on a more active role within our community, please reach out to Käthi Brunner and the Leadership & Nomination Committee. You can contact Käthi at

The WSAVA’s future is bright and it is an honour and a pleasure to achieve and celebrate our accomplishments together. Wishing you all a healthy, prosperous and enjoyable 2018.

Dr Walt Ingwersen, WSAVA President
