WSAVA International Award for Scientific Achievement


Dr Claudia Reusch, Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine and Director of the Clinic for Small Animal Internal Medicine at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, is to receive the 2021 WSAVA Award for Scientific Achievement in recognition of her outstanding contribution to endocrinology in small animal medicine.

Following graduation, Claudia Reusch worked in private small animal clinics in Germany before moving to the University of Munich, where she became Professor for Small Animal Internal Medicine in 1992. She is a founding member of the European Society of Veterinary Endocrinology (ESVE) and was its president from 2001-2003. From 2003-2006 she was president of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine-Companion Animals (ECVIM-CA). In 2016 she was awarded honorary membership of ESVE and, in 2019, she became an honorary member of the Society for Comparative Endocrinology (SCE), USA.

WSAVA Global One Health Award


Dr. Thinlay N. Bhutia, a veterinarian who has spent his career working towards the creation of a rabiescontrolled state in his Himalayan home state of Sikkim, is the recipient of this year’s World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) One Health Award.

Beginning his career as a state veterinary officer in India, Dr. Bhutia began working in rabies control as program coordinator of the first government-sanctioned, state-wide program–the Sikkim Anti-Rabies and Animal Health (SARAH) Division- a dedicated Division under the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Government of Sikkim. This program advocates for the humane treatment of animals, while focusing on sterilization, rabies vaccination and community education as control measures.

WSAVA Future Leader Award

Dr Elizabeth Boudreau, Assistant Professor of Small Animal Neurology at Texas A&M University, USA, is to receive the 2021 WSAVA Future Leader Award in recognition of her contribution to research and her role as an educator.

Dr Boudreau’s research is primarily focused on the biology of canine brain tumors and, more specifically, on how genetic and immunological features connect with therapeutics. She has active canine clinical trials with MD Anderson Cancer Center collaborators, examining immunotherapies for glioma in dogs with naturally occurring disease. The aim is to fast-pace effective therapeutics to canine and human patients, which are commercially and biologically viable.

In addition to her research, Dr Boudreau has received awards for her teaching. She leads the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) neurology residency training program at Texas A&M University and has been invited by ACVIM to present on teaching methodologies.

WSAVA Global Meritorious Service Award

Emeritus Professor Michael J Day has received theAward in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the understanding of immunology and vaccination and of his wider contribution to the practice of veterinary medicine globally.

Michael Day began working with the WSAVA in 2003, holding a range of roles, including membership of the Gastrointestinal Standardization Group and Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee. He was Chair of the WSAVA’s Vaccination Guidelines Group from 2009 until March 2020 when ill-health necessitated his stepping down from this and his other WSAVA roles. In 2010, he became founding chair of WSAVA’s One Health Committee. Professor Day was latterly the BSAVA Assembly Representative and joined the WSAVA’s Executive Board in 2017 and was elected Honorary Treasurer in 2018.

The inaugural Vice-President of the WSAVA Foundation, Professor Day helped to develop and lead its pioneering African Small Companion Animal Network (AFSCAN) project, which is working to raise standards of companion animal veterinary care in SubSaharan Africa. In parallel with his WSAVA work, he chaired the BSAVA Scientific and Education Committees and served as BSAVA President in 2013-2014. He was also Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Comparative Pathology and was a trustee of several veterinary charities, including Mission Rabies and the Soulsby Foundation. In April 2020, Michael was appointed as the first Honorary President of Mission Rabies.

In 2017, Professor Day retired from a 35-year academic career as a veterinary pathologist and immunologist with a research focus on companion animal immunemediated and infectious diseases. He holds the titles of Emeritus Professor of Veterinary Pathology at the University of Bristol, UK, and Adjunct Professor of Veterinary Pathology at Murdoch University, Western Australia.
