VECCS - a brief history

The VECCS was originally organized as the Veterinary Critical Care Society (VCCS) with a set of established bylaws in 1978. Members of the Veterinary Anesthesia Society merged with VCCS in 1983. The name of the organization was changed to its current VECCS when the American Association of Veterinary Emergency Clinicians joined the Society in July, 1984. Membership has grown from approximately 200 in 1985 to over 4000 today. The membership represents a variety of areas of veterinary medicine, including private general practice, specialty referral practice, emergency practice, and teaching institutions. Membership is worldwide with representation from more than 25 countries located on every continent.

The Society meets its education and training objectives through continuing education and research seminars and publications such as the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (JVECC). The Society collaborates with the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC), Academy of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Technicians (AVECCT), American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA), and the Academy of Veterinary Technician Anesthesia and Analgesia (AVTAA) to conduct an annual meeting, the International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium (IVECCS). Initiated in 1988, IVECCS assembles over 150 of the profession’s top speakers and educators. In addition to IVECCS, the Society sponsors or co-sponsors other continuing education seminars in conjunction with major veterinary meetings throughout the country (see listing on the VECCS website at www.veccs.org).

The Journal of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care (JVECC) is the scientific publication of the Society and the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care as well as the European Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Society (EVECCS) and European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ECVECC). Contents of the Journal include refereed articles of original research, reviews, abstracts, short clinical practice reviews, and case reports. The Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care is recognized on Medline, and is abstracted in Index Veterinarius and the ISI Alerting Services. The Journal is included with VECCS membership and is available online and hard copy.

In 2014, the Society launched a Facility Certification process for those practices whose main purpose is devoted to emergency and critical care medicine. The certification is a three tiered level system based on hours of operation, staffing, and facility requirements. The minimum facility requirements will be in-line with the “Minimum Guidelines for Emergency and Critical Care Facilities” posted on the VECCS website.
