A royal guest, the launch of our Global Dental Guidelines and the chance to perform with global percussion phenomenon, Stomp. What more could we ask?

This year’s WSAVA World Congress brought our community together and featured a host of initiatives to enhance the veterinary care of companion animals. Check out these highlights.

A royal guest joined us for the opening ceremony

We were honoured that Her Royal Highness Princess Marie of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat, was able to join us for the Opening and WSAVA Awards Ceremony. A proud moment for all of us!

The successful launch of the WSAVA Global Dental Guidelines

The launch of the WSAVA Global Dental Guidelines was highly anticipated by our Member Representatives and journalists who packed the room for a lively briefing from Dental Guidelines Committee Co-Chair, Dr Brook Niemiec. He explained why they are so important and the benefits they offer to veterinarians and patients. More than 25 of our member associations have already endorsed them!

Do you pledge to help end pain in animals’ mouths? If so, talk to your association about endorsing the Guidelines and stay tuned for details of our exciting social media contest coming soon!

A packed room for a panel session on Brachycephalic syndrome organized jointly by WSAVA, FECAVA and DSAVA

Our panel discussion on Brachycephalic Syndrome in dogs was so popular that delegates continued to arrive well into the session. We were also delighted to welcome Danish TV star Sebastian Klein, who tried on a mask owned by FECAVA President Wolfgang Dohne. Wolfgang is a keen runner and uses the mask for altitude training as it reduces the oxygen supply to the nose, mimicking the effects of brachycephalic syndrome on affected dogs. Serious debate then got underway with many questions to our panel of experts.

Our inspiring award winners received their awards

This year’s WSAVA Award Winners were presented with their Awards, including WSAVA Past President Dr Jolle Kirpensteijn, who received the President’s Award from WSAVA President Dr Walt Ingwersen. Jolle became involved with the WSAVA as a Member Representative for the Netherlands in 2005. He joined our Executive board in 2006 and served as WSAVA President from 2010 to 2012. He resumed the role temporarily in 2013, following the sad passing of incoming president Dr Peter Ihrke.

Walt Ingwersen says: “Jolle moved us rapidly along the path towards professionalization and financial self-sufficiency. Many of the initiatives he introduced enabled us to accelerate the pace at which we were building our global veterinary community and providing tools and resources to enable them to carry out their work more effectively. Jolle was a friend and mentor to many, including me. We would not be where we are today without his vision and leadership.”
