Meet Käthi Brunner, Chair of the Leadership and Nomination Committee

Käthi has been a clinician in her private general practice near Basel in Switzerland for more than 30 years. She is a former president of the Swiss Small Animal Veterinary Association (SVK) and also a former board member of the Swiss Association of Veterinarians (GST) of which she is now an honorary member. She is currently SVK member representative to the WSAVA and to FECAVA. She is also chair of the WSAVA’s Leadership and Nomination Committee (LNC)

Tell us about the role of the LNC

Succession planning and leadership are key to the stability, vitality, diversity and long-term success of every organization, including the WSAVA. This means that we must plan well ahead to identify potential candidates who may be suited to take up key roles in the WSAVA in the future. It is the role of the LNC to research potential candidates and to make recommendations to the Executive Board. We also help the Board by researching and recommending potential candidates for the WSAVA Global Meritorious Service Award and the WSAVA-Hill’s Next Generation Award.

Why did you want to get involved with the WSAVA?

I very much wanted to be part of the global veterinary family and to help to develop veterinary practice all around the world. WSAVA World Congress 2016 Cartagena was one of the highlights of my WSAVA career. Seeing the pride our of Colombian colleagues as they staged such an impressive congress for the first time was wonderful!

What do you enjoy most about your role on the LNC and what is most challenging?

I enjoy taking responsibility and helping to make decisions. Selecting candidates is not easy but it is great to see them go on to contribute successfully to the WSAVA.

What do you do when you are not working?

I enjoy travelling around the world. This year I have visited Netherlands, China/Kirgizstan (The Silk Road), Moscow for the FECAVA Spring Council meeting, Copenhagen for WSAVA/FECAVA Congress and Morocco to do some hiking. I enjoy meeting people and seeing nature. I also enjoy all types of music – especially Züri West - my favourite Swiss band. I go to concerts often! Finally, of course, I enjoy spending time with my family, my cats, guinea pigs and rabbits.
