Welfare Committee

Report: 2002-08-08

The WSAVA Welfare Committee continues to concentrate its efforts on organising the welfare seminars that are now a part of the main programme at each congress.

The programme for Granada is on the "Use of Dogs and cats in Veterinary Teaching and Research" and a very skilled group of people have been drawn together to deliver the lectures.

The program for Thailand 2003 is still in the development stage, but the theme will be on "Animal Welfare and Conservation in Asia."

We suggest that a programme on the welfare aspects of Rabies in stray animal populations and urban animal control in Asia be one part of the programme and the other to concentrate on conservation and welfare of both domestic and wild species such as the elephant and Sacred red crowned crane of China, Korea and Japan (Grus japonensis) whose welfare has been seriously affected by man's progress and habitat destruction. We are currently searching for suitable speakers to fill this programme.

The programme for Rhodes Greece in 2004 still has the theme, "Welfare of animals involved in transgenic engineering and cloning programmes." We are searching for key speakers in this area.

The committee is open to suggestions for the themes of future seminars. In the past our success has depended on sponsorship of Ralston Purina. Since the merger of Purina and Nestle this sponsorship needs to be renegotiated and our future may depend on receiving this sponsorship. Purina and Friskies, the Spanish branch of the Nestle group, are sponsoring the Granada 2002 meeting.

We need a set agreement for ongoing sponsorship for a number of years to enable this programme to continue. The programme has such an excellent potential for media interest that sponsorship should not be difficult to secure.

Sincerely,

Roger Clarke, Committee Co-Chair
