Brief history of Association: WESTERN VETERINARY CONFERENCE (WVC) originated in 1928 in Logan, Utah, United States as the “Intermountain Livestock Sanitary Association.” In keeping with the focus of the practitioner-founders, the meetings in the early years were held at the Ogden Livestock Show. In 1963 the meeting moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and in 1965 the name “Western States Veterinary Conference” was adopted. In 1985 the term “States” was dropped and the Association was renamed the “Western Veterinary Conference.” In 1987 the Association incorporated as an IRS 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization based in Nevada. WVC’s mission is to provide the highest possible quality continuing education to the veterinary medical profession and related groups. The professional material presented will be state-of-the-art information delivered by nationally and internationally recognized and emerging authorities. The mission will be accomplished in a professional and financially responsible manner in the best interest of all Conference members. With the exception of a one-year cancellation, due to a hotel fire, the Conference has met annually since 1928 and emphasizes both diversity and quality presentations for practicing veterinarians in all species areas. However, a very large majority of educational content is directed towards small animal practitioners. The long-standing membership policy of the association is that registration at the Annual Conference automatically enrolls the registered attendee as a full member of the Association for the following year. In 2009, WVC opened the Oquendo Center. This 69,500 sq’ building is a one-of-a-kind facility, built to provide space and equipment to deliver year-round, ”hands-on” continuing education for veterinarians and other health professionals. Typical of a not-for-profit corporation in the United States, WVC is operated by a professional staff of 25 under the direction of an independent Board of Directors who are elected by the membership. The current Board is comprized of 14 veterinarians and 1 veterinary technician.
