NVCG CHAIRMAN`S REPORT TO THE ASSEMBLY MEETING OF WSAVA IN JEJU,KOREA IN OCTOBER 2011.

1. Membership trends:

Current membership stands at 520 members CE courses encourage new members to join and a discounted pre-congress rate for members has increased membership numbers. Outstanding subscriptions are becoming an increasing problem and we are actively pursuing outstanding subscriptions and updating our database. Statements have been sent out for the next years` subscriptions.

2. Continuing Education:

SMALL ANIMAL ULTRASOUND DIAGNOSTICS 29 MAY 2010 – Prof. Robert Kirberger
A third session of ultrasound lectures and practical specifically on echo-cardiography took place in May 2010. This was a practical ultrasound course aimed at clinicians with a special interest in ultrasound. This specialized course had very limited numbers and was on a first come first reserved basis. The course was excellent and thanks were extended to Prof.Kirberger and the sponsors: Novartis Animal Health and Axim.

Pre-Congress Day 3 August 2010; 5th SA Veterinary and Paraveterinary Congress, Drakensberg
We were privileged to have Dr Sharon Center join us to discuss aspects of the liver. The course content was detailed and comprehensive. Professor Center has a wealth of experience and is a world authority on veterinary hepatology. Some 150 delegates attended. We are once again indebted to our sponsors Cube Route and Merial.

5th SA Veterinary and Paraveterinary Congress Drakensberg 4-6 August 2010. On all accounts, this congress proved to be a major success. NVCG members made up a large part of the attending delegates. There was great exposure of our local veterinary specialists with local pertinent veterinary issues being highlighted. The international speakers attending were of a high caliber and added to the overall success of the bi-ennual congress.

WVA Congress 10-14 October 2011 in Cape Town , South Africa.
There was a specific request from SAVA to support this world class event and to hold back from organizing other CPD events for 2011. The purpose is to get more support for attendance in Cape Town and not to dilute the sponsorship which is hard to come by under the current economic climate. The NVCG heeded the request and have decided to make the pre-congress day our major CPD event for 2011. Prof Jody Lulich will be presenting aspects of Urology at our Pre-congress day on 10 October 2011. Hills and Afrivet will sponsor the day. There are already in excess of 350 delegates for this event!

3. Marketing and Communication

We have a functional google group to encourage communication and interaction between members. Please support this by visiting www.nvcg@googlegroups.com . Members receive a quarterly newsletter and sms and e-mails are circulated via Vethouse. Regular articles are published in The Vetnews. The committee meets three times a year via telephone conferences and annually at a central venue. We also make use of a committee google group where all communications and information is displayed. The Chairman represents NVCG at FEDCO and several committee members also have portfolios on FEDCO. I, Dr. Kevin Stevens am currently the WSAVA representative at the annual international Assembly meeting and the new convenor of WSAVA 2014 South Africa. Dr Mark Sheperd will become the new NVCG Chairman and WSAVA representative in October 2011.

4. International relations

At the congress in Geneva, at the Assembly meeting, it was my privilege and pleasure to bid for hosting WSAVA in South Africa in 2014. There were excellent bids from Singapore, Thailand and Germany and I am very pleased to report that our bid was successful. We have a wonderful opportunity to bring some two thousand veterinarians to our door step and show case veterinary science in South Africa. Furthermore, we have an opportunity to reach out to the rest of Africa and make a real difference. Thanks must go to Dr.Brian Romberg for his years of dedication to WSAVA and for putting South Africa on the map.

WSAVA World Congress 2014 - CAPE TOWN SOUTH AFRICA
The scientific content will include 2 streams with an African tone highlighting our pertinent epidemiological problems. This will be a stage for our own veterinarians to be heard. It will also be a true privilege to bring the calibre of WSAVA lecturers to our continent to present talks on all aspects of small animal veterinary medicine, surgery and animal welfare and to fulfill the vision of WSAVA - dedicated to the continuing development of companion animal care around the world. There will be a drive to draw fellow African vets to Cape Town. Incentive schemes have been discussed to encourage neighbouring veterinarians to attend.
For the first time, WSAVA will make use of a central Conference Organizer who will work in conjunction with local organizers. The main advantages are: no financial liability and responsibility for local associations, a significant decrease in work load for the local team, a preset profit share for the host association and input in all facets of the congress with the use of a well-oiled centralized system. The intention is to stream-line administration and organization and to create a more direct and sustained income for WSAVA. The WSAVA committee has finalized the appointment of a Private Conference Organizer. The PCO is Kenes International. This will come into immediate effect. A SOP is in place and will be applied for WSAVA 2014 in Cape Town. The National Veterinary Clinicians Group (NVCG) of the South African Veterinary Association will be the host and the congress will take place in Cape Town from the 15th - 19th of September 2014. We are expecting to attract in excess of 2000 veterinarians from all over the world to our country. This is an event not to be missed.
A local host committee has been set up and has already met with WSAVA EB and Kenes in January in Johannesburg. SAVETCON will be the local conference conveners. We will meet in Jeju to further discuss WSAVA 2014. As the guinea pigs in the equation there is much to be discussed and learned!

5. Report on current veterinary issues

Tail docking-this is still a contentious issue as laymen are continuing to dock dogs tails without being prosecuted. We have been in contact with SAVC and SPCA in order to try and close the loop holes in this legislation. There is on-going work with educating breeders and the public. On going education of the public regarding buying non-vetted puppies from unscrupulous breeders is essential and needs to be a priority for our PR committee.

Vet shops-SAVC is becoming involved in legislation by exercising controls over veterinarians with vetshops and on-line out-lets.

Vaccine availability to breeders-on going problems which we are trying to address. More than often our colleagues are involved in this supply.

Laymen practising as vets-more of a problem in rural practice but we request that if such people are known to you that they are reported to SAP and a case made. Regrettably, this falls out of the ambit of SAVC.

CPD- there is a great deal on offer to vets and we need your input as to how we as NVCG can best be of value to furthering education. At present we are addressing the tardiness on the behalf of the SAVC in acquiring the accreditation of our CE courses.

It is our intention to support WSAVA`s bid to include Nutrition as an important parameter of our clinical evaluations. This will be tabled at the AGM in Cape Town in October 2011.

6. For notification:

A request from KUSA for NVCG members to further discount micro-chipping was rejected.
The committee will stand for a further two years. We welcome two new committee members: Jono Savadier and Leaura King. We bid Alain Carter farewell and thank him for his commitment and contribution to NVCG over the years. I will remain as Chairman until WVA in October 2011 and then Vice Chairman; Mark Sheperd will be inducted as the new chairman.

7. For discussion-nil

8. Finances:

Detailed financials were approved at the AGM in the Drakensberg.
Subscriptions have been increased to R 200 per year.
Banks Balances as at 20 September:
Current a/c: R 3200.00
Investment a/cs: R 431 500.00

REPORT ON C/E FOR SOUTHERN AFRICA

14/07/2011 FROM LAWSON CAIRNS

The first C/E held by me in the region was on the 19th June at MJEJANE LODGE close to the border with Mozambique and Swaziland. We had 7 vets from Swaziland and 18 vets from Mozambique. It should be remembered that these vets travel for 2-3 hours and come across their borders to attend this conference so there is a large amount of effort and some expense for them to attend this event.

The subjects covered by DR MARTIN DE SCALLY were as follows

1 Diagnostic imaging of the thorax
2 Making and evaluating a blood smear
3 Canine epilepsy
4 Toxicology
5 Polyuria Polydipsia
6 Can & Fel Dermatosis
7 Babesia Canis
8 Drugs to treat cardiac disease
9 Developmental Osteoarticular Disorders

Subjects covered by Dr GUY FYVIE from Hills included

Discussion on nutrition with reference to development and use of J/D for treatment.

The venue was excellent and well received by the vets who attended. A Flash drive was provided for the Mozambique organizer to copy and hand on to the participants.

This C/E was very well received by the participants who are keen to have at LEAST a yearly session from WSAVA

The second C/E was held in the Dept of Agriculture buildings in Gaborone on 7th july and 22 vets attended and 5 vet students at present attending the Vet College in Glasgow Scotland.

This was an exceptionally well motivated and interested group who had the lectures carry on until well past our official lecture time was over. Dr DE Scally and DR Fyvie gave the same lectures as in Mjejane. This is a country which is a pure pleasure to provide C/E for because of the interest and effort they show in what is being provided. Pictures will be sent on. The level of knowledge also seems to be high.

Lecture subjects were the same as for Mozambique with lots of other questions were asked.

The 3rd C/E was held at the University of Lusaka in Zambia on the 9th of july. The turnout was disappointing with only 24 participants despite having been promised 40-50.

Hills Pet Nutrition have given R2000 as sponsorship to each of the venues where they lectured and we thank them for this.

Lawson Cairns WSAVA C/E organizer for Southern Africa
