During the period, close to 500 veterinarians attended the event, representing our profession in China from Hong Kong, Beijing, Sichuan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang. We recorded the highest attendance so far. We received many congratulatory messages from other associations including the Small Animal Medicine Society of China Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Association, Taipei Veterinary Association, Hong Kong Veterinary Association, Society for Protection of Small Animal of the Shanghai Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Association, Beijing Veterinary Association, Veterinary Society of the Sichuan Canine Association, Jiangsu Veterinary Society, Small Animal Nutrition and Clinical Society of the Zhejiang Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Association, Shanghai Pet Traders Association. Professors and specialist guest speakers from China Agriculture University, Seoul University Korea, Hong Kong, UK and Shanghai were invited and gave their special presentations. A total of 37 manufacturers sponsored this congress. Acting vice-president Dr. Zhang Jian-ping presided over the opening ceremony. SHSAVA president, Dr. Geoffrey Chen, at the opening reported to the audience a summary of activities for the year 2006. This is possible only with full support from the committee and from all the members. A total of 16 seminars were organized focused mainly on clinical diagnoses and treatment. Besides the recent 5th WSAVA (Shanghai Group) CE Seminar on “Dog and cat dental diseases”, other seminars included special topics as follows: skin diseases, gastro-intestinal tract diseases, cardio-vascular diseases, urinary tract diseases, common problems in dog and cat anesthesia and how to make surgical decision with proper evaluation, clinical immunology, clinical nutrition, orthopedic diseases, ophthalmic problems, clinical analysis and control, clinical hematology analysis, reproductive diseases, feline diseases etc. In 2006, not only veterinarians from Shanghai but also from as far as Jiansu, Zhejiang, Sichuan provinces etc. came to our seminars, adding up to a total of 1,800 attendance for the year. Furthermore, in 2006 SHSAVA organized three overseas trips to Taiwan, U.S. and the Czech Republic. The association organized a delegation to Taipei in February attended the Taipei Veterinary Conference; in July to Hawaii attended the 143rd U.S. Veterinary Congress; and in October to Prague attended the 31st WSAVA World Congress. In November in Wuhan, China, we help organized two seminars in conjunction; the 1st meeting for the China Society of Small Animal Medicine, and the 13th conference of the veterinary surgeons of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Association. We had also attended the small animal veterinary seminars organized by Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Sichuan provinces. SHSAVA magazine “The Shanghai Small Animal Veterinarians” was launched in December. This first issue included 18 articles and summaries, together with commercial advertisement were published. We plan to publish this magazine bi-annually, mainly to cover SHSAVA activity, WSAVA news, professional and academic articles and papers, business and manufacturers information, and finally commercial advertisements. Finally, President Dr. Chen specially pointed out that “the rabies condition at the present moment is not looking good. It has great impact on the veterinary clinics and hospitals. Under this circumstances, we must heighten our awareness to disease prevention, more stringent clinical examination, and must report to authority in timely manner any discovery of epidemic in progress. Also, educate people on the threat of rabies to mankind, be a responsible pet owner, and encourage them to get rabies vaccination at government appointed facilities. Association’s secretary, Dr. Yang Qi-qing in his closing speech expressed gratitude to all the sponsors and supporters, especially to the senior veterinarians and regulatory officials in Shanghai for their care and support. Also thanks to the support from sister organizations in other provinces, such as from Beijing, Sichuan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hong Kong SAR, and Taipei in particular, their leaders. Contribution from business sector were mentioned, stating the 37 business sponsors including Shanghai SUBO Bio-Tech Co.,Ltd., Royal Canin, Intervet (Hong Kong) Ltd., Nestle (China) Ltd., U.S. Pet Food Institurte, Summi Pet Products Co. Ltd., SYSMEX Medical Electronic Ltd., Shanghai Anjiashang International Trading Co. Ltd., Eddison (Beijing) Biotechnology Ltd., Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc., Pfizer (Animal Health) Ltd., Bayer Health Care Ltd., Merial International Trading (Shanghai) Co. Ltd., Mars Co., French Virbac Beijing Liaison Office, etc. We hope that there will be more veterinarians joining the Small Animal Veterinary Association. Committee member Dr. Xu Guo-Xing presided over the closing ceremony, ending with great success the two day congress of the 2006 Small Animal Veterinary Association. At the annual wrap-up meeting of the association held on December 29, 2006, the committee made evaluation on our activities for the year and all committee members expressed faith and confidence in further development and goal of our association in the year 2007. For all these events, we have participations not only from the city of Shanghai alone, but also from adjacent provinces of Jiansu and Zhejiang. We have organized a group of delegation to participate in the 30th WSAVA Congress held in Mexico City, and a few other national level small animal veterinarian conferences and technical exchange seminars in China. We have further expanded our organization in the year 2005 to include the veterinary organizations in Jiangsu, Zhejiang provinces to form the Shanghai SSAVA Federation. We shall continue to hold more continue education programs in 2006 under this name. With our effort, we see a significant improvement in the clinical level of our veterinarians. Some of them even in the forefront of veterinary technology. Our membership continues to increase to a current 194 members. Through active work of our committee and participation by our members, we have established constructive relationship with the local government authority in charge of the veterinary affairs in broad range of issues. 2006 SSAVA Plans for 2006 In 2006 our association plans to establish more exchange activities with other small animal veterinary associations in other cities in China; inviting specialists in China and outside of China to talk for us, enhance our learning and raise our level in veterinary technology. We will continue to arrange domestic and international tours, participate in national and international meetings, and especially the 31st WSAVA Congress in Prague, thereby help our veterinarians to understand more on the state of development of our profession, widen our perspectives and improve the level or our services; Actively liaise with our government authority in charge of veterinary affairs, reflecting our views and opinions, and standing up for the legal rights of small animal veterinarians; to serve them better. Organize continue education and training courses to up grade the knowledge and intellectual credibility of our members; and any other activities in line with our organizing principle and in benefit of our members. To promote a modern and civil society, we shall work to popularize the idea of small animal care, humane treatment to animals and human-animal bonds. We will continue to cooperate with our government, accepting our responsibility and providing consultation to them, participate in setting the standard, helping in the process of enacting the laws and regulations for control of pets. We shall also provide consultation services to our members and clinics; and provide opportunities for inter cities, international cooperation in small animal related business.
