Boothe’s Small Animal Formulary

When veterinarians are working with patients, they don’t have time to run to a computer or an enormous reference manual each time they need the most up-to-date drug information. That is why the American Animal Hospital Association has now released the fifth edition of Boothe’s Small Animal Formulary, the definitive source for pharmacological information in small animal medicine.

The completely updated and expanded new edition is organized to help veterinarians find all the information they need in one durable, reliable source that fits easily into a lab coat pocket. Boothe’s Formulary covers more than 650 generic drugs, including corresponding brand names, indications, dosages, routes and frequencies. In order to make cross-referencing simple, the book lists drugs alphabetically by generic or brand name and by action or therapeutic use. Eight appendices, including volume and weight equivalents, common terms and units, and weight conversion tables, provide helpful reference information. New in this edition are sections listing available preparations, drug company sources, species approval status and constant IV infusion rates.

The handbook was written by Dawn Boothe, DVM, PhD, MS, Dipl. ACVIM, Dipl. ACVCP. Dr. Boothe is the director of the Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory at Texas A&M University and the preeminent expert in veterinary pharmacology today.

Boothe’s Small Animal Formulary, 5th Edition, is available at a price of $23.95 for AAHA members and $27.95 for nonmembers. Discounts are available for greater quantities. For more information, or to place an order, call the AAHA Member Service Center at 800-883-6301 or 303-986-2800.

Veterinary Cancer Therapy

More than ever, dog and cat owners are becoming willing to fight their pets’ cancer, and veterinary care providers need more information than ever for leading the battle. To meet this need, the American Animal Hospital Association has created the Veterinary Cancer Therapy Handbook: Chemotherapy, Radiation Therapy, and Surgical Oncology for the Practicing Veterinarian, the most comprehensive resource available for the latest in cancer treatment options and pharmacology.

Organized in a 194-page pocket-sized binder and divided with tabs, the handbook is designed to provide quick reference to major topics in cancer diagnosis and treatment. It presents comprehensive overviews divided into 15 chapters by tumor type. Each chapter outlines the recommended treatments for each type of cancer, including radiation, surgery, and the most current cancer-fighting drugs. The chapters include diagnosis and staging, induction and intensification, maintenance, and curative and palliative treatment protocols.

Also provided are detailed appendices to assist practitioners in nutritional management, surgery, drug administration, and the procurement and safe handling of drugs and supplies. An appendix listing grief hot lines and other important resources for clients and care providers is included as well.

Written by Barbara Kitchell, DVM, PhD, ACVIM, Susan M. LaRue, DVM, PhD, ACVS, and Robert L. Brooks, DVM, MS, ACVS, ABVP, the Veterinary Cancer Therapy Handbook: Chemotherapy, Radiation Therapy, and Surgical Oncology for the Practicing Veterinarian is available at a price of $48.95 for AAHA members and $58.95 for nonmembers. Pets With Cancer

For the first time, owners of pets that have been diagnosed with cancer can refer to a single resource to answer their questions and concerns. The American Animal Hospital Association has released Pets Living With Cancer: A Pet Owner’s Resource by Robin Downing, DVM.

When Dr. Downing was faced with the cancer diagnosis of her own dog, she discovered that there was no single resource that answered all of her questions. As a result, Dr. Downing combined a comprehensive range of information about the disease with her own knowledge and experience to create a comprehensible and compassionate reference for pet owners.

Pets Living With Cancer is structured around the questions pet owners face as they deal with their pet’s cancer, beginning with diagnosis and moving to treatment options, surgical oncology, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, complementary therapies, nutrition, hospice care, and euthanasia. The 154-page book answers questions about the fears and emotions cancer evokes as well as technical questions about the disease and its treatment in a comprehensive and caring manner. Throughout the sections of questions and answers, Dr. Downing interweaves photographs and memories chronicling her dog Murphy’s fight against cancer, serving as a constant source of hope and a reminder that cancer does not always mean death.

Authored by AAHA hospital director Robin Downing, DVM, Pets Living With Cancer: A Pet Owner’s Resource is available in bookstores for $19.95. For more information, or to place an order, call the AAHA Member Service Center at 800/883-6301 or 303/986-2800.
