The Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre (KAT Centre, www.katcentre.org.np) in Kathmandu, Nepal is seeking volunteer veterinarians, vet nurses, and vet students to work with our two vets and six animal care staff to provide treatment for street dogs and cats. ABOUT THE KAT CENTRE More than 20,000 dogs live on the streets of the city of Kathmandu, Nepal. Many suffer from starvation, infected open sores, mange, and rabies. The KAT Centre’s goals are to humanely create a healthy, stable dog population in Kathmandu and to eliminate rabies, which kills hundreds of people in Nepal every year. We are accomplishing this through a widespread street dog sterilization program, medical treatment for sick and injured dogs, vaccinations, and humane education. In the seven years since the KAT Centre was founded, we have sterilised over 40% of the female street dogs in Kathmandu, the canine population has decreased from approximately 31,000 to 22,500, and surveys show that people are more compassionate towards street dogs. The organisation’s impact goes far beyond the animals it treats. VOLUNTEERING AT THE KAT CENTRE As a volunteer at KAT, you will have opportunities to learn different approaches to veterinary medicine and help treat illnesses and injuries that are uncommon in developed countries. You will also be able to ride on KAT’s animal ambulances with staff who catch and release street dogs and respond to emergency rescue calls. Additionally, we hope you will share your knowledge and experience with our vets and other staff to help make sustained improvements to our procedures. We welcome volunteers for any amount of time, and no particular experience is necessary. Please come to the KAT Centre willing to adapt to the unpredictability of life in Nepal and the limited resources available. Since we don’t have a structured volunteer program, we encourage volunteers to take initiative to ask the staff how they can get involved. The major reasons are the lack of manpower, diagnostic tools, lack of technical know-how, and lack of awareness by pet owners. The lack of focus on diagnosis has perpetuated a risk of a public health hazard. To address this concern, Animal Hospital and Research Center was established in 2008 with an aim to provide quality service to pet animals, being the first of its kind in the private sector within Nepal. The hospital has a full-fledged moden pathology laboratory that includes veterinary automatic hematology counter, biochemical analyzer, sophisticated microscope; X-ray, ultrasound, bedside monitor etc. Animal Hospital and Research Center requires- 2 skilled Veterinary Volunteers and 1 veterinary nurse to assist in treatment/ surgery; new graduates also welcome to apply. ______________________________ Visakha SPCA has one of the most comprehensive animal shelters in India: dogs and cats, cattle and birds, and wildlife that was being illegally kept to be sold dead or alive. As if that wasn't enough work to do, we also have our ambitiously eco-friendly, 100% organic farming and renewable energy projects to run, plus our medical facilities for the animals! One of our most important projects is our animal birth control program (ABC) for dogs and cats. Recently, due to heightened publicity about dog bites, the public's tolerance for any trouble with the street dogs has gone way down. Consequently, Visakha SPCA wants to go full tilt to spay/neuter/vaccinate 10,000 street or community dogs: fewer dogs means fewer bites -- and fewer dogs put down. We need your help to accomplish this and to show the public that we can control the problem so the authorities don't have to start killing street dogs again en masse. Urgent call for veterinary volunteers For further info please visit www.vspca.org or contact Visakha SPCA at info@visakhaspca.org _____________________________________ British Veterinary Association Overseas Diary An update report on the BVA Overseas Group's activities. Please note that the BVA has not approved or assessed any of the organisations or projects listed but we may be able to put you in touch with previous volunteers for background information and advice. It may also be helpful to know that the Overseas Group has produced a basic guidance note on working overseas as a volunteer which is available on the BVA website from helenac@bva.co.uk. __________________________________________________________________________ APPEAL FOR EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS The Education and Research Committee of Usmanu Danfodiyo University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Sokoto, Nigeria requests donations and subscriptions of books, journals, publications, illustration posters and models, CD-ROMs, and other interactive learning materials.
