One Health 2011 Congress

CSIRO is hosting the 1st International One Health Congress in Melbourne, Australia 14 - 16 February 2011

For the last few years, the One Health concept has brought together experts working in the areas of animal and human disease. One Health has provided a new synthesis for public health and veterinary communities, particularly in the United States of America, Europe and Australia. However, there is an urgent need and a growing interest to broaden the agenda to incorporate a truly global perspective and to include environmental issues

This 1st International One Health Congress will achieve these goals by focusing clearly on the risks and challenges brought about by the interactions between animal and human health and the environment. It will consider these in the general context of the science and research being undertaken, but critically it will focus on the outcomes that need to be achieved to effectively manage the growing risks to global health.

Confirmed speakers as follows
• Laureate Professor Peter Doherty
• Dr Alex Thiermann
• Dr Henrik C. Wegener
• Professor Mark M.
• Dr David Heymann
• Professor John Mackenzie
• Dr Peter Daszak
• Dr Martyn Jeggo

The Congress program will feature keynote plenary sessions, expert panel/debates, Out of the Box Sessions and the development of outcomes across the following themes running throughout the Congress:
1. Setting the Scene
2. Disease Emergence
3. Environmental Drivers
4. Trade, Food Security & Food Safety
5. Science, Policy and Political Action
6. Global Survival

Please take a moment to look at the One Health website: www.onehealth2011.com.au.

International Veterinary Opportunities

Call for volunteers in Nepal

In Nepal, Veterinary practice is currently focused primarily on symptomatic treatment. The major reasons are the lack of manpower, diagnostic tools, lack of technical know-how, and lack of awareness by pet owners. The lack of focus on diagnosis has perpetuated a risk of a public health hazard. To address this concern, Animal Hospital and Research Center was established in 2008 with an aim to provide quality service to pet animals, being the first of its kind in the private sector within Nepal. The hospital has a full-fledged moden pathology laboratory that includes veterinary automatic hematology counter, biochemical analyzer, sophisticated microscope; X-ray, ultrasound, bedside monitor etc.

Animal Hospital and Research Center requires- 2 skilled Veterinary Volunteers and 1 veterinary nurse to assist in treatment/ surgery; new graduates also welcome to apply.
Contact at: anim.hosp@gmail or 977-1-4480005 or 977-9851110650 (mobile) to Dr. Saroj Yadav.

Visakha SPCA has one of the most comprehensive animal shelters in India: dogs and cats, cattle and birds, and wildlife that was being illegally kept to be sold dead or alive. As if that wasn't enough work to do, we also have our ambitiously eco-friendly, 100% organic farming and renewable energy projects to run, plus our medical facilities for the animals!

One of our most important projects is our animal birth control program (ABC) for dogs and cats. Recently, due to heightened publicity about dog bites, the public's tolerance for any trouble with the street dogs has gone way down. Consequently, Visakha SPCA wants to go full tilt to spay/neuter/vaccinate 10,000 street or community dogs: fewer dogs means fewer bites -- and fewer dogs put down. We need your help to accomplish this and to show the public that we can control the problem so the authorities don't have to start killing street dogs again en masse.

Urgent call for veterinary volunteers

Our new mobile camps require skilled veterinary help and we need ongoing teams to come and assist in these surgeries. As well as donated supplies. Please contact us for further information on these life saving projects.

For further info please visit www.vspca.org or contact Visakha SPCA at info@visakhaspca.org
