Norwegian Small Animal Veterinary Association Annual Report (posted June 2007)

NSAVA is an association under the Norwegian Veterinary Association. The mission of NSAVA is to maintain the interests of companion animal veterinarians regarding scientific, political and social matters linked to the profession.

Members
Membership number is 456 medlemmer, including 6 honorary members and 15 retired veterinarians æresmedlemmer og 15 pensjonister. In additionn, 14 students were members of NSAVSA. The membership number has been steadily increasing.

Honorary members
Jorunn Grøndalen, Kristian Lande, Ulf Erik Gustavsen, Tor Lie Ulstein, Torunn Knævelsrud and Petter Heim.

Strategy
The strategic plan for 2007 has been revised and is available to all members through the association’s website.

Work descriptions have been developed for all board members

Contact with members
The website consists of two parts, the information site and the discussion forum. The discussion forum has proven to be a good and popular site for colleagues for discussion of matters of interest, both scientific, as well as questions related to the profession. Information from the Board is also posted on the discussion forum for rapid dissemination of info to members. Webmasters have been Eivind Arntzen og Ellen Eide Kjellman. From 2007 Marte Grotnes will replace Arntzen. At the end of the year, 538 members were registered on the discussion forum. In addition, the NSAVA has a printed newsletter, with 4 issues per year. The editor is Ellen Eide Kjellman.

Contact with members
The website as an active forum for discussion and exchange of opinions and is run by Eivind Arntzen and Ellen Eide Kjellman.
Ellen Eide Kjellman also edits the written newsletter, which is distributed four times yearly.

Continuing education activities
October 2005: Practical surgery. Lecturers: Prof. Jolle Kirpensteijn, Dipl. ECVS and Henry L’Eplattenier, Dipl. ECVS,, Utrecht University, The Netherlands

CE activities for Cuban colleagues, lecturer paid for by the NSAVA: General surgery. Lecturer: Henry L’Eplattenier. The cooperation between the NSAVA and the Cuban veterinary associations will be continued. The President of the NSAVA attended the 2005 Cuban meeting.

Present activities
An annual activity plan is worked out by the board and distributed to the members through both the website and the newsletter. The activity plan for 2005 includes the following main matters:
Guidelines for referral practice
Emergency practice – contact with the authorities for drawing up guidelines regarding responsibility and payment
Sale of practices
Continuous control of NVA-approved small animal clinics
Drugs: Routines for vaccination, drug costs, availability of veterinary vs human medicines.
An agreement has been reached to merge the microchip databases in The “Dyreidentitet” owned by the Norwegian Veterianry Association and the Norwegian Kennel Club
Contact with users’ organisations: Permanent contact is established with the Norwegian Kennel Club and the Norwegian Pedigree Cats’ Association
