Report Spring 2010-Spring 2011

Present board:
President: Anne Torgersen
Board member Trine Marhaug
Board member Christian Mæland
Board member: Cecilie Tidemand Ruud Askvig
Board member: Clara Jalland

Members
There are at present 460 ordinary members, an increase since last year of 55 members (12%). This is due to an active process from the Board to promote the NSAVA in e.g. CE courses and meetings. Of additional non-paying members, 5 are honorary members, 18 retired veterinarians and 27 student members.

There are at present 19 companion animal specialists and 30 companion animal veterinary clinics approved by the umbrella organisation; the Norwegian Veterinary Association (NVA). No approval has been withdrawn after site visits, which implies that the clinics maintain a good standard.

Member services
In addition to disseminating information through the website and NVA Journal, the NSAVA has its own printed newsletter, issued 4 times a year. The web Forum is also an important means of communication with the members. This forum serves both as a source of information on matters of concern to the NSAVA members as well as a discussion forum. The Forum is highly successful, with a steady increase in number of users. At present there are more than 700 users, and during the year almost 7000 posts were registered. Information from WSAVA is also disseminated through the forum.

• To create scientific and social collaboration between members for the benefit of companion animal practice
• To represent and promote the interests of companion animal veterinarians in the Norwegian Veterinary Association (NVA)
• Contribute for a steady increase in the level of scientific qualifications among members
• Influence important decisions in society that affect the companion animal veterinarians and their clients and ensure that society maintains confidence in the high level of qualifications among members of NSAVA

Present main activities
Policy statements regarding several items have been worked out. These include
Transportation of animals in cars in a secure way
Sedation of companion animals
Euthanasia of newborn kittens
Antiparasitic treatment of dogs and cats
Issues concerning breeding dogs with congenital diseases

NSAVA works to increase visibility of companion animals in society and emphasize the significance of human-animal interaction. The Blue Dog project has been actively promoted through veterinarians, user organisations and media. NSAVA also works to increase funding for companion animal related research. Illegal import of dogs a matter of great concern, the NSAVA working through their members and the users’ organisations to focus on the animal health and welfare implications and the zoonotic aspects

The collaboration with users’ organisations, including the Norwegian Kennel Club and the Norwegian Cat Breeding Association, has been further strengthened.

NSAVA continues its support in the WSAVA/NSAVA Continuing Education program in Cuba. The topic for the November 2010 CE course in Cuba sponsored by NSAVA was anesthesiology and pain control with Dr. Andreas lervik as lecturer as lecturer.
The 2011 course will be held in November. Topic is ethology, with Kristin Vear Prestrud as lecturer.

Planned activities
Ethical and animal welfare issues are emphasized. This applies both to veterinary services as well as to the obligation to educate owners and breeders on welfare issues and preventive medicine. The latter also includes the obligation to have all companion animals microchipped.

Several campaigns are planned regarding preventive veterinary medicine, topics include i.e. antiparasitic treatment, geriatric medicine, obesity, vaccination, microchipping, castration, dental health and insurance. The goal is to focus on these topics, both from a veterinary as well from an owner point of view.

A working group has been established to collect information on specialization and organized continuing education presently established throughout Europe.
