WSAVA Continuing Education – helping veterinary surgeons around the world

The WSAVA CE programme is entering its seventeenth highly successful year. The project was the brainchild of Gabriel Varga and Klaus Dreier and based on the need for post graduate veterinary education in Eastern Europe which was then experiencing an exciting time of momentous change. Six countries / veterinary associations formed the nucleus of a programme which now covers four continents and thirty two countries.

The association has benefitted from the vision and help given by the four initial sponsors, Bayer Animal Health, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Intervet Schering Plough and WALTHAM, a division of Mars. Each company donates money to the programme and to this is added funds donated by far sighted individual veterinary association assembly members. The Austrian, Australian, French, British, Danish, Norwegian, Dutch, Greek, Shanghai, Thai and Swiss associations have all helped in this most altruistic and necessary form of development for up and coming countries. It is especially pleasing to record that this year, for the first time ever; we had a donation from an individual, Eric Takeshi.

The overriding aim of the programme has been to take international speakers to developing countries and to assist in the provision of ongoing education for practitioners. It is of great pleasure to note that some of the early recipients have developed during this period to the point where they have strong associations and an internal continuing education programme. It was never the intention of WSAVA to subsidize associations forever and I count it as a huge success when we are told – “we can manage without you!” The Slovakian, Czech and Polish associations have even reached the stage when they have been making positive contributions to the programme by waiving advertising fees etc.

In 2011 European countries involved in the programme will be Serbia in a meeting which will also be subsidized by SVK, the Swiss Association (with a delegation from Montenegro), Bulgaria, Romania, Latvia, Lithuania Ukraine and Albania.

In Asia, Iran, Malaysia, China ( 2 meetings ) India, and Nepal.

In South and Central America, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba ( a meeting which for many years has been supported by the Norwegian Association ) , Costa Rica, El Salvador Uruguay, Paraguay and Panama.

In Africa and we are grateful for the considerable help given by both the British and Dutch Associations in this area, Malawi, Kenya and Botswana.

Each year is both exciting and worthwhile. We are grateful for the help given by the regional organisers, Drs, Luis Tello, Lawson Cairns, Roger Clarke and Julian Wells and of course the assembly representatives who organise the meetings within their own countries.

WSAVA Monthly NEWs – JANUARY 2011

Central PCO - A new era of WSAVA Congresses

The Congress Steering Committee (CSC) appointed in 2009 is chaired by Dr. Nicola Neumann (NN) with four members: Colin Burrows (NAVC), Siraya Chunekamrai (VPAT), Ed Hall (BSAVA), and Amanda Evans (Industry). The CSC met several times since its appointment in 2009 and reviewed different Professional Congress Organiser (PCO) models appropriate to the current needs of WSAVA. It was concluded that a core PCO working directly for and with the WSAVA for a contractual period of 5 years would work best to assure the longer term stability of the WSAVA. Some of the advantages of a core PCO include consistency in service delivery, leverage of core conference costs, positioning for long-term contracts with sponsors and accountability to WSAVA without having local host associations needing to reinvent the wheel every year. We will see the vibrant WSAVA Congress enhances while providing for the future financial sustainability of the WSAVA. The branding of WSAVA Congress and penetration in to new markets would be better facilitated by a core PCO. They were adopted by a majority vote of 2010 Assembly participants in Geneva.

The WSAVA World Congress will rotate through three global regions, comprised of the Americas; Europe, Africa, and the middle East; and Oceana/Asia. As set out in the WSAVA Assembly meeting in Sao Paolo, the first Congress to work with a core PCO would be in 2014.

2014 Congress location selected

At the WSAVA Assembly meeting in Geneva, WVA President Dr. Tjeerd Jorna presented the results with the majority of votes of 2010 Assembly participants going to Cape Town, South Africa.
WSAVA World Congress 2014 - CAPE TOWN SOUTH AFRICA

At the recent WSAVA Assembly Meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland, four countries, including South Africa, presented bids to host the 2014 WSAVA congress. There were some excellent submissions from Germany, Singapore and Thailand and it was with great excitement that the South African delegation witnessed the Assembly voting in favour of us hosting the WSAVA conference in Cape Town. It will have been twenty years since we last held the WSAVA Congress in Durban (1994) and we are ecstatic to get the WSAVA back in Africa.

Africa has a mystical attraction….wildlife and scenery, a friendly hospitable people with a wonderful lifestyle waiting to welcome you to our beautiful land. Game drives, to majestic mountains, a rainbow of interesting cultures all blended together…

South Africa has been show-pieced in the recent Fifa Soccer World Cup and is now firmly positioned on the map. Besides the organizational skills and the spectacular stadiums, the true spirit of our nation beamed through. A nation once divided now celebrate and bond together and reflect the true warm hospitality and vibrancy which is so unique to Africa. The Vuvuzela may be banned but will never be forgotten…Cape Town, affectionately known as the mother city, is a gem with a beauty which is truly breathe taking. Table Mountain and the two oceans with the wind swept vineyards epitomize this beauty. The International Convention Centre is a state of the art facility and is centrally situated with ample affordable accommodation within walking distance from the venue.

The scientific content will include an African tone highlighting our pertinent epidemiological problems. This will be a stage for our own veterinarians to be heard. It will also be a true privilege to bring the calibre of WSAVA lecturers to our continent to present talks on all aspects of small animal veterinary medicine, surgery and animal welfare and to fulfill the vision of WSAVA - dedicated to the continuing development of companion animal care around the world. There will be a drive to draw fellow African vets to Cape Town. Incentive schemes have been discussed to encourage neighbouring veterinarians to attend.

For the first time, WSAVA will make use of a central Conference Organizer who will work in conjunction with local organizers. The main advantages are: no financial liability and responsibility for local associations, a significant decrease in work load for the local team, a preset profit share for the host association and input in all facets of the congress with the use of a well-oiled centralized system. The intention is to stream-line administration and organization and to create a more direct and sustained income for WSAVA.

The National Veterinary Clinicians Group (NVCG) of the South African Veterinary Association will be your host and the congress will take place in Cape Town from the 15th - 19th of September 2014. We are expecting to attract in excess of 2000 veterinarians from all over the world to our country. This is an event not to be missed. Please diarize the dates now and start preparing for your mystical African experience.

WSAVA World Congress 2011
– JEJU, KOREA

The Korean culture is surging along with Hallyu (The Korean wave)

With the popularity gained by the Korean dramas that were exported to China in 1996, the word ‘Hallyu (The Korean wave),’ given by the Chinese media, has emerged as a new term that expresses the social phenomenon. One of the representative examples used this term extensively is the Korean drama entitled ‘The Winter Sonata’ that was broadcasted in 2002 at NHK, Japan. Apart from China, the Korean media and music culture has become a great sensation to Taiwan and Hong Kong, thus Korean entertainers are highly regarded and are given exceptional treatment. Especially, it served as an opportunity to change the global perception about Korea, thus realizing a magnificent effect to the cultural exchange between Korea and Japan.

When someone mentions ‘Hallyu,’ people would easily come up with dramas or styles. As mentioned earlier, ‘The Winter Sonata’ that was a huge hit across Japan or ‘The Great Janggeum’ that was highly popular in China are considered to be the representative Hallyu dramas. Also, the singer ‘Rain’ was ranked in ‘the Time’s 100 most influential people in the world' and Bae, Young-jun, Lee, Byeong-hun, Lee, Young-ae, and Choi, Ji-woo have gained tremendous popularity in the Hallyu area.
