The Latin-American Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society, LAVECCS was created on April 1st 2007 in Santiago de Chile. The foundational meeting gathered colleagues from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. Nonetheless, our dream was to bring together the whole Latin-America into one force. The purpose of LAVECCS is to promote, spread and secure the knowledge progression and elevated standards of practice in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Medicine in Latin-America. LAVECCS is proud to say that we have among our associates, colleagues from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Grenada, Mexico, Peru, United States of America and Uruguay. We have also been able to incorporate the former BVECCS (Brazilian Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society) and the newly formed ECVECCS (Ecuadorian Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society) as subsidiaries of our Association. Among our goals are the followings: • Associate and affiliate into one organization doctors in veterinary medicine, veterinary technicians, veterinary students, and other individuals engaged in the practice of, or who have special interest in the field of veterinary emergency and patient critical care; • Foster and encourage education, research and scientific progress in veterinary emergency and critical patient care; • Establish and promote uniform standards and guidelines for the practice of veterinary emergency and critical patient care; • Develop protocols and requirements for Emergency and Critical Care services in Latin-America • Improve the quality of patients’ critical care • Design qualification systems to the professionals practicing this specialty among Latin-American countries • Organize and promote meetings, seminars, curses and congress at national, regional and international level • Disseminate information pertinent to veterinary emergency and critical care to all interested groups and organizations. • Stimulate the exchange of information between similar entities inside and outside the veterinary professions, at national and international level with the goal of knowledge progression of veterinary emergency and critical care and/or compared medicine • Promote and defend the associates’ interests • Give on accord to the pertinent laws the title of specialty Since our very beginnings LAVECCS has been recognized and full supported by VECCS the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society of North America which has been leading the way in the development of the specialty, setting the standards and rules in the practice of veterinary emergency and critical care medicine in the world since the ´90s. We have also recently started into the discussion of a partnership with EVECCS European Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society for future meetings and education related activities. On the pursue of our goals LAVECCS has created several different Committees on Trauma, Analgesia and Anaesthesia, Sepsis, Emergency Surgery, Ethics, and Acid-base and Electrolytes balance. Our Committee of Educational Affairs in cooperation with the Committee of Trauma has developed a standardized course on the Primary Care of the Trauma Patient based on the ATLS (Acute Trauma Life Support) program model, course that was already been held several times in different countries including Chile, Brazil, Argentina, México, Uruguay, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia among others. Our I Latin-American Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Congress was held last 6 – 7 December 2008, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It sure was a complete success with 3 simultaneous conference rooms, 17 speakers from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, USA and Uruguay, and more than 300 assistants from 8 different Latin American countries. Our II Latin-American Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Congress was held from 2 to 5th September, 2009 in León, Guerrero, México in conjunction with the León Veterinary Congress a very well-known, successful congress that congregates more than 3000 colleagues every year. LAVECCS REPORT 2011 The Latin American Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society, LAVECCS a non-profit organization was created on 1 April 2007 by a group of like-minded friends and colleagues who shared a common dream to improve the level of emergency and critical care medicine throughout Latin America through education and the exchange of experiences. The purpose of LAVECCS is to promote, spread and secure the knowledge progression and elevated standards of practice in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Medicine in Latin-America. Four years on, we are proud to have made great progress. LAVECCS has among its associates, colleagues from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Mexico, Peru, Paraguay, Panama, Puerto Rico, Spain, United States of America and Uruguay. This year we have coordinating our activities with the newly formed VECCA (Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care from Argentina) along with the already incorporated BVECCS (Brazilian Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society) and ECVECCS (Ecuadorian Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society). The ABC LAVECCS Certification Program, so far includes two separate, two and half day courses involving both theory and practical work, which have been held several times in Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico and Uruguay. The next step is to run them in Paraguay, Argentina, Chile and Venezuela and then go from there The first course – ABC Trauma - teaches veterinarians safe, reliable methods for assessing and initially managing emergency patients. The second course - ABC Critical Care - covers the fundamental principles which should be observed during the first 24 hours’ care of critically ill patients. After a theory and practice exam with a minimum of 75 % requirement for approval, LAVECCS has already certified 220 colleagues for the ABC Trauma and 13 colleagues for de ABC Critical Care Courses. The III Latin American Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Congress was held on June, 2010 in Buenos Aires with 400 assistants from 11 different countries. On 28 July 2011, the IV Latin American Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Congress will open in Santiago de Chile. It will run for three days in two simultaneous rooms and offers both a general program and eight workshops. LAVECCS room again was held again in the Congress of Leon, Mexico in September 2010. This is the largest congress in Latin America with more than 3,000 delegates every year. LAVECCS strategic alliance with Royal Canin as our major sponsor is fully operative and has expanded to our ABC LAVECCS Certification Program. The JLAVECCS an on-line publication, ISSN 1688-6100, www.journal.laveccs.org will complete its 2nd year of trimestral publication on August 1st and has added a Large Animal and an Exotic Section. Moreover, the Large Animal Committee has held the I Equine Emergency and Critical Care Course last March in Cordoba, Spain; whereas the Exotic Committee will have its own three day Symposium in the IV Latin American Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Congress in Santiago de Chile Finally, our training programs with very important Emergency and Critical Care Hospitals in USA, Spain and Brazil for LAVECCS’ members are fully operative. Executive Board Elections will be held by the beginning of September, according to our bylaws the present Vice-President, Dr. Jesús Paredes from México will become our President until 2013.
