LAVECCS - a brief history

The Latin-American Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society, LAVECCS was created on April 1st 2007 in Santiago de Chile. The foundational meeting gathered colleagues from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. Nonetheless, our dream was to bring together the whole Latin-America into one force. The purpose of LAVECCS is to promote, spread and secure the knowledge progression and elevated standards of practice in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Medicine in Latin-America.
LAVECCS is proud to say that we have among our associates, colleagues from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Grenada, Mexico, Peru, United States of America and Uruguay. We have also been able to incorporate the former BVECCS (Brazilian Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society) and the newly formed ECVECCS (Ecuadorian Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society) as subsidiaries of our Association.
Among our goals are the followings:
• Associate and affiliate into one organization doctors in veterinary medicine, veterinary technicians, veterinary students, and other individuals engaged in the practice of, or who have special interest in the field of veterinary emergency and patient critical care;
• Foster and encourage education, research and scientific progress in veterinary emergency and critical patient care;
• Establish and promote uniform standards and guidelines for the practice of veterinary emergency and critical patient care;
• Develop protocols and requirements for Emergency and Critical Care services in Latin-America
• Improve the quality of patients’ critical care
• Design qualification systems to the professionals practicing this specialty among Latin-American countries
• Organize and promote meetings, seminars, curses and congress at national, regional and international level
• Disseminate information pertinent to veterinary emergency and critical care to all interested groups and organizations.
• Stimulate the exchange of information between similar entities inside and outside the veterinary professions, at national and international level with the goal of knowledge progression of veterinary emergency and critical care and/or compared medicine
• Promote and defend the associates’ interests
• Give on accord to the pertinent laws the title of specialty

Since our very beginnings LAVECCS has been recognized and full supported by VECCS the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society of North America which has been leading the way in the development of the specialty, setting the standards and rules in the practice of veterinary emergency and critical care medicine in the world since the ´90s.
We have also recently started into the discussion of a partnership with EVECCS European Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society for future meetings and education related activities.
On the pursue of our goals LAVECCS has created several different Committees on Trauma, Analgesia and Anaesthesia, Sepsis, Emergency Surgery, Ethics, and Acid-base and Electrolytes balance.
Our Committee of Educational Affairs in cooperation with the Committee of Trauma has developed a standardized course on the Primary Care of the Trauma Patient based on the ATLS (Acute Trauma Life Support) program model, course that was already been held several times in different countries including Chile, Brazil, Argentina, México, Uruguay, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia among others.
Our I Latin-American Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Congress was held last 6 – 7 December 2008, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It sure was a complete success with 3 simultaneous conference rooms, 17 speakers from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, USA and Uruguay, and more than 300 assistants from 8 different Latin American countries.
Our II Latin-American Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Congress was held from 2 to 5th September, 2009 in León, Guerrero, México in conjunction with the León Veterinary Congress a very well-known, successful congress that congregates more than 3000 colleagues every year.
