NUMBER OF MEMBERS Formal members: 115 (Board members and Steering Committee members for JBVP activities, with annual membership fee) Affiliate members: approx. 2500 (without membership fee) ___________________________________ Brief history of the association: History Japanese Board of Veterinary Practitioners (JBVP) was founded in 1998 by a dozen of charter member veterinarians seeking for the peaceful and mentally affluent society based on the human animal bond concept, in which companion animals and their family receive the benefit of modern companion animal medicine practiced by a body of veterinarians armed with advanced scientific knowledge and respect from the society. To achieve these goals, our action plan was the education of veterinary practitioners, by offering general re-education of graduate veterinarians from all over the country with a definite curriculum that simulates an internship in a large-scale hospital for a year or two. This was our approach to breed generalist veterinarians who share the concept of "common practice". With the introduction of "common practice" in veterinary medicine, practitioners can entrust specialists, secondary institutions or emergency hospitals with their cases. Thus, the veterinary profession as a whole gains complete trust and respect in the society. With these in mind, JBVP started educational activities such as the nationwide Lecture Series from Hokkaido to Okinawa, Regional Conventions in four major cities, and the Annual Meeting in Tokyo. Membership Currently, the JBVP membership is consisted of Board Members, Secretaries, and Steering Committee menders of various activities. These members, currently 115 veterinarians, pay annual membership fee and have responsibilities for organizing educational activities. Those who have participated in the seminars or meetings for the past year are considered to be Affiliate Members, and they receive e-mail letters and an annual Newsletter without any membership fee. The number of Affiliate Members is estimated to be about 2500. Current nation-wide activities The night lecture series is carried out monthly or weekly (Tokyo only) in 10 different locations from Hokkaido (the northern island) to Okinawa (the southern island). Through this educational series, we have a chance to educate about 1000 veterinarians each month. In five major cities, Sapporo, Sendai, Kyoto, Osaka and Fukuoka, we have annual local conventions in spring, and we had about 1500 veterinarians and 1300 veterinary technicians attended in 2010. The Annual Meeting is held in Tokyo in September every year, and it is now recognized as the largest veterinary convention in Japan. In 2010, the 3-day 12th Annual Meeting had a total of 5471 people registered, with 2231 veterinarians, 1124 veterinary technicians, 525 students, 476 pet owners, and 1115 industry people. The educational activities also cover east Asian nations, and the 1-year lecture series were also held in Korea as the joint activities once with KAHA and once with Seoul VMA. The JBVP speakers are also invited frequently to some Taiwanese and Chinese veterinary meetings.
