The International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management is a unique organization dedicated to promoting, enhancing, and advancing pain management in animals. The practice of pain medicine demands an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating multiple modalities to ensure the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of the painful patient. The IVAPM represents the diverse scope of this field through membership from a variety of origins, including veterinarians, credentialed veterinary nurses, veterinary assistants, researchers, veterinary practice managers, etc. The integration of these perspectives is essential to treating pain in animals and establishing continuity of care. Founded in 2003, the IVAPM intends to become the recognized leading forum and resource in animal pain for the veterinary profession through research, education, and advocacy. The IVAPM hopes to facilitate contact, conversation, and the free exchange of information among like-minded individuals in an inclusionary manner. This website will provide access to archived information as well as to literature and abstracts relevant to pain management in animals. Thanks for your interest in the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management!" 1. WSAVA and IVAPM relationship overview The IVAPM status as an affiliate member gives access to a larger global network of contacts and CE opportunities to its world-wide members with which to spread the message of pain management in animals. CE is an area of great interest for both organizations and provided both through an annual meeting in an effort to raise the level of pain management. Academy members have discounted WSAVA Congress registration. Other benefits to the IVAPM include: - Being part of the WSAVA Global voice and advocacy on issues related to companion animals. - A seat and vote on WSAVA matters at the annual WSAVA annual Assembly meeting. - Volunteer opportunities to sit on and participate in WSAVA initiatives such as the WSAVA Global Pain Council 2. Annual and General Meeting 2011 IVAPM Annual Meeting will be aligning with the International Veterinary Critical Care Society and the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiology Annual Meeting at the Gaylord Opryland in Nashville, TN from September 14th to September 18th, 2011. Please access: http://www.2011.iveccs.org/ or download the IVECCS Pain Lecture & IVAPM Activities Schedule IVAPM General Meeting: September 16th at 5:30pm (room TBA) 3. Membership IVAPM had approximately 1250 members by the end of December, 2010. IVAPM has now representation (members) in Africa (Cape Verde, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, Somalia, South Africa), Asia-Pacific (Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Timor-Leste), Brazil(32), Canada (83), Europe (Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom (47), Middle East and North Africa (7), Mexico (96), Nicaragua(8)and Uruguay (5). USA has currently 916 members with great representation in CA (111), CO (43), MA (57), NC (38), NY (69) and TX (56). International membership from 30 different countries represents approximately 24% or close to ¼ of our membership. This has decreased by 7% compared with 2009 data base. In 2008, members from 18 countries outside North America comprised 19% of total IVAPM members. In 2009, we had members from 25 countries representing 32% of our general membership. Official invitations to join the Academy were e-mailed to more than 40 key opinions leaders between Sept and Nov 2010. This initiative will continue throughout 2011. We have been getting very good responses from our colleagues, especially from Mauritius, Hong Kong, Colombia, Czech Republic among others. The idea is to create a small but representative membership group in these countries. USA and Canada have student chapters and important representation in the academic environment Also, it is important to highlight a continuous and steady increase in the IVAPM membership in Mexico. This could be attributed to some past efforts like the local Pain Management Meeting in 2008. - Current Association membership – update for website Aug 2011: over 1300 members 4. WSAVA Global Pain Council Dr. Karol Mathews is the chair of a group of eight veterinarians, most of them IVAPM members (Dr. Sheilah Robertson, Dr. Duncan Lascelles, Dr. Kazuo Yamashita and herself). IVAPM BODs Dr. Paulo Steagall and Peter Kronen are representatives of South America and Europe, respectively. IVAPM is playing an important role in this initiative. WSAVA's Vision for a Global Pain Council (GPC) 1. The publication of a global pain management treatise, which provides sound pain management standards/guidelines that address issues of pain assessment, pain management strategies, proper patient selection and monitoring, and responsible use guidelines. The treatise would address both acute and chronic pain in dogs and cats, will elevate pain assessment to the "4th vital sign" of a standard general physical examination, and be focused on the concepts of treating predictable pain and using appropriate pain treatment as a diagnostic tool. A component of this document will be sample pain management strategies and protocols. These protocols will be individualized for regional relevance based on the finding of point 3 below. 2. An inventory of current myths towards pain management and educational materials that address this (tied to point 3 below). 3. A survey of national issues affecting pain management, to gather current information on available products, governing legislation, and regional attitudes. 4. An educational program to both popularize the Global Pain Management treatise as well as address the issues identified in point 3. This will be a 3-prong effort: a) WSAVA-sponsored CE tracks at both its own annual World Congress or at other international Congresses that offer WSAVA educational tracks. These can be stand-alone or presented in combination with the animal welfare track now taking place at many international conferences b) Regional CE, delivered as part of the WSAVA CE program (http://www.wsava.org/CE.htm) c) An online pet owner resource of scientifically valid issues surrounding pain occurrence and management in pets, to provide the veterinary community with a credible online resource where to send their pet owners for additional information d) The literature derived from the above will be popularized by publication in the veterinary literature and through translation into Spanish, French, Japanese, Chinese, and other native languages as need dictates. To accomplish this, the WSAVA proposes three phases to this project: Phase I • Develop the Global Pain Treatise • Generate an inventory of regional pain management needs • Develop CE programmes, ensuring regional reach and relevance. To include academic institutions. Phase II • Implementation of CE program plans on an initial priority yet pragmatic basis (areas with need but also a high likelihood of success) • Work with regional academic institutions/associations to work towards self-sufficiency/reliance on continued regional Pain Management CE. • Popularization of the Global Pain Management Treatise Phase III • Updating Global treatise • Further implementation of CE program with a focus on academic institutions • Regional lobbying for access to needed pain management medication • Expansion into pet owner education/awareness Initial sponsorship has been restricted to Phase I and generously provided by Boehringer Ingelheim, Merial, Novartis Animal Health, Pfizer Animal Health, and Vetoquinol. Sponsorship for Phase II & III will be discussed based on Phase I outcome. 5. IVAPM Certification In 2008 our Board of Directors unanimously approved our Certified Veterinary Pain Practitioner (CVPP) and Certified Animal Pain Practitioner (CAPP) credentialing programs. We believe that pain is best managed through an interdisciplinary approach; that effective pain management can be best achieved through cooperation, shared knowledge, and the collective wisdom of healthcare professionals from many disciplines. The goal is to network allopathic and complementary clinicians together to develop superior ways to provide quality, integrative care in the recognition, prevention, and treatment of pain in animals. The IVAPM certification program is designed to represent a minimum level of competence as an interdisciplinary pain practitioner while providing the platform and incentive for continued and expanded learning in the field of veterinary pain management. The current program is designed to best meet the needs of our core membership, the small animal practitioner in North America. However, this program remains relevant to all veterinary pain related professionals throughout the world, as it is focused on the foundational principles of pain management. Our current program will lead to the title of Certified Veterinary Pain Practitioner (CVPP) for veterinarians and licensed technicians; Certified Animal Pain Practitioner (CAPP) for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants with certification in canine rehabilitation. The WSAVA is well-known as the international “association of the associations” and both organizations share common interests in areas of mutual benefits. The WSAVA is dedicated to the continuing development of companion animal care around the world and its mission is to foster exchange of scientific information between individual veterinarians and veterinary organizations. Its membership is made up of veterinary organizations from all over the world, which are concerned with small companion animals. Currently, there are over 80 member and affiliate associations, representing over 70,000 individual veterinarians from around the globe! This year, the WSAVA is celebrating their 50th anniversary.
The IVAPM status as an affiliate member will give access to a larger global network of contacts and CE opportunities to its world-wide members with which to spread the message of pain management in animals. CE is an area of great interest for both organizations and provided both through an annual meeting in an effort to raise the level of pain management. Academy members will have discounted WSAVA Congress registration. Moreover, the IVAPM will have a page on www.wsava.org to highlight the Academy’s activities, CE events and services to the global companion animal veterinary community. Other benefits to the IVAPM include: - Being part of the WSAVA Global voice and advocacy on issues related to companion animals. - A seat and vote on WSAVA matters at the annual WSAVA annual Assembly meeting. - Volunteer opportunities to sit on and participate in WSAVA initiatives. - The ability to make use of a meeting room at the Congress (including audiovisual equipment) for an association meeting. The Assembly meeting – Sao Paulo, July, 20th, 2009 IVAPM’s BOD representative Dr. Paulo Steagall introduced the Academy’s membership application in a 10-min presentation for over 70 delegates representing associations from all over the world. Dr. Steagall, a native from Brazil, explained why the IVAPM wanted to become a WSAVA member and also presented the history, vision and mission of the group. After voting, the application was unanimously accepted by the Assembly and its members. “This is definitely another effort to promote the IVAPM and increase awareness of pain management around the world. This promising partnership shares the same goals and scopes and shows how the IVAPM intends to become the recognized leading forum for the veterinary profession when one considers pain management in animals. I believe our Academy will be a great resource for speakers in the future and this will only increase our membership internationally. The meeting was very productive and I had the chance to meet colleagues from all over the world and talk about pain management in their countries” says Dr. Steagall. In Brazil, over 3600 delegates attended the largest WSAVA Congress to date. The exhibition hall had 270 stands from both veterinary and pet associated companies. The next annual WSAVA meeting will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, (Jun 2nd - 5th) 2010.
