It has been busy and productive year for the Hong Kong Veterinary Association (HKVA) on various fronts. We have held six general committee meetings during the last year in addition several members have been involved with subcommittees. I would now like to cover the main HKVA activities during the past year. Continuing Education This is possibly the most important work of the HKVA in Hong Kong. The following is a brief overview. 1. HKVA Annual Conference Sadly with the SARS crisis in Asia last year our May conference had to be cancelled. This year the HKVA is working with Sydney PGF on our conference in May details as follows: Re: Feline Medicine Symposium May 26th-28th 2004 The Sydney Post Graduate Foundation (PGF) in conjunction with the HKVA will be holding a Feline Medicine Symposium at the YMCA, Kowloon from Wednesday 26th to Friday 28th May 2004. The speakers are Dr Vanessa Barrs and Dr Julia Beatty both specialists in the field. Topics covered will include Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases, Oncology and Internal Medicine. The conference will be held over one full day and two evenings. It is hoped if successful this venture will become a regular feature in HKVA calendar. For more information please visit: http://www.pgf.edu.au/courses/HK2004.pdf 2. WSAVA Seminars This year the HKVA benefited with having the WSAVA Congress in Thailand. With many lecturers passing through Hong Kong we were able to hold 3 lectures in October 2003. Dr Laurent Garosi “Practical management of epileptic seizures” Dr Robert Holmes “Anxiety Related Behavioural Problems” Dr Colin Burrows “Top Tips in Gastroenterology” 3. Evening Seminars There were a number of evening seminars held for members last year. These included topics as diverse as: Professor Montavon “A New Innovative Technique for Cruciate Rupture Repair” Dr Anthony Goodhead "Cataracts and Ocular Emergencies" Dr David Coyle "A General Practice Look at Hyperadrenocorticism and New Developments". Dr David Coyle “The Analgesia Revolution” 4. Veterinary Public Health Conference A Veterinary Public Health Workshop was held by the FEHD in association with the HKVA on the 16-17th October 2003. Association Relationships 1. Liaison with the Veterinary Surgeon’s Board (VSB) The HKVA’s relationship with the VSB continues to mature. The VSB has actively been seeking the HKVA’s opinion on various matters as it continues to recognise the role of the HKVA as one of the official veterinary bodies in Hong Kong. The HKVA was invited to send a representative to a VSB Working Group on CPD. The first meeting was held on the 30th March 2004 where it was agreed a survey should be produced and sent to all registered veterinary surgeons in HK regarding the availability of CPD and the possibility of introducing compulsory or voluntary schemes. Schemes in Australia, NZ, California and the UK have been studied in an attempt to produce guidelines suitable to Hong Kong’s environment. In keeping with the HKVA’s commitment to CPD we have produced CPD record forms along with giving recommendations to members regarding minimum CPD requirements based on the RCVS. 2. Letter to Director of Government Housing In August 2003 Dr John Teather wrote on behalf of the HKVA committee expressing our concerns regarding the proposed enforcement of the ban on keeping Pets in Public Housing. We received a very favourable reply from the Director of Government Housing and as you are all well aware a landmark result was obtained saving many thousands of lives. Communication with Members 1. Website The HKVA website has been a good way to communicate with both members and the general public. It is currently being updated with a new members section and an open forum for discussion please visit www.hkvaorg for further details. 2. Email newsletter A new introduction last year has been a regular monthly email update. This was introduced to keep members informed about issues on a more regular and timely basis. It is a very cost effective and rapid way for the HKVA to communicate with members. 3. Classifieds (Website and fax) The classifieds have been a very useful service for members and provides an additional income for the HKVA 4. Database The database is updated regularly. Our current membership stands at over 100. Vet ball The third HKVA Ball was held on Saturday November 15th 2003 at the Hong Kong Football Club the theme was “Intergalactic”. It was a very successful night and another way that the HKVA can help facilitate relationships between members. Clinic Accreditation subcommittee The HKVA is in the process of establishing a Clinic Accreditation scheme and a draft document can be viewed at: http://www.hkva.org/html/ClinicAccreditation.html The goal of the scheme is to provide members of the public with an objective means of knowing the standard of a veterinary clinic beyond the waiting room. The standards have been drafted based on similar USA/Australian and New Zealand schemes and take into account the unique aspects of veterinary practice in Hong Kong. The minimum standards have been devised to be realistically achievable and in line with minimum best practice standards worldwide. The scheme will be voluntary. The clinic accreditation subcommittee has continued to meet this year to look into ways forward with the scheme. The draft document has been posted on our website for comments this year. The HKVA plan to launch the scheme later in 2004. Dr Jane Gray, HKVA President 2003/2004
