The Finnish Association of Veterinary Practitioners Annual Report 2010

FAVP has two sections, Small Animal Section and Equine Section.
At the end of the year FAVP Small Animal Section had 463 members, of which 23 had joined during 2010.

Chairperson of the Small Animal Section was Minna Rinkinen.
Other board members: Sari Granholm, Tapio Palolahti, Susanna Martikainen, Beate Schugk, Karoliina Autio, Marika Melamies and Katja Rajalin (secretarian).

FAVP Small Animal Section held four meetings in 2010. Main focus of our activity is on organising CE events. Two CE events took place during 2010

Our major event is the Annual Meeting with CE lecture days in March. This year lecture days were at 12th -14th March 2010 in Espoo, Finland
The topic was brachycephalic syndrome by Dr. Gerhard Oechtering from University of Leipzig, Germany. In addition three faculty members from Helsinki University Veterinary Teaching Hospital gave presentations about their current respiratory disease research project and clinical services. 78 veterinarians attended the lectures. After the scientific lectures a panel discussion was arranged, where veterinarians, dog breeders and dog show judges discussed the brachycephalic disease and how breeding programs should take that into account. A free lance reporter-dog breeder wrote an article about the brachycephalic syndrome and panel discussion to a breeders’ journal, and her article was met with great interest and re-published in other breed club journals, too. So we hope that not only vets now have a deeper knowledge about the problem but also dog owners and breeders are more aware.

In October 2010 FAVP Small Animal Section organized a financial course to practicing vets together with the Equine section. Fourty attendees.

WSAVA representative is Minna Rinkinen, who attended the WSAVA Assembly meeting in Geneva in June 2010.

FAVP is cooperating with the Finnish Kennel Club regarding the national launch of Blue Dog project. We have agreed that a web based program, linked to Finnish Kennel Club web pages, would be most feasible but the details need to be discussed further. Cooperation will continue.
