The founding members of this association formed the base of the group of professionals that are now known as AMVEPE (Asociacin de Mdicos Veterinarios Especialistas en Pequeas Especies). AMVEPE has grown over the years to reunite those professionals who wish to improve, through organized courses, seminars and sharing of information, the veterinary health care for small animals (dogs and cats) within their clinics. AMVEPE was registered as only legally recognized association by the ministry of agriculture and livestock in 1996. Information and courses offered and/or impulsed by the association as well as the investment in better and newer equipment for the establishments, has allowed the Ecuadorian small animal veterinarian to keep improving his/ her professional image towards a more specialized and modern one. ___________________________________ ANUAL REPORT OF AMVEPE QUITO, ECUADOR YEAR 2010/2011 AMVEPE Ecuador is now fully legalized, and had elections in January of 2011. This is the current board until January of 2013: President: Dr. Germán Fierro Vice President: Dr. Juan Carlos Molina Secretary: Dr. Ruben Vallejo Treasurer: Dr. Luis Bastidas First Vocal: Dr. Patricio Ruiz Second Vocal : Dr. Galo Valverde Third Vocal : Dr. Ellen van Nierop Fourth Vocal: Dr. Patricio Jara Fifth Vocal: Dr. Edgar Cruz AMVEPE is still actively involved in the legislation about the responsible keeping of dogs, together with the ministery of Health and the ministery of Agriculture, and other interested parties a law has been put in place formulated to include general good care of a canine pet as a legal obligation. Putting it into practice is a long and tedious bureaucratic process, but we are making progress just by having a law that ensures canine welfare. At this moment the law is being made into rules within the municipality of Quito and AMVEPE is present as advising member. AMVEPE is a currently a member of WSAVA and FIAVAC. AMVEPE held a ceremony to honour the founding members of the association. It was a small but intense gathering, sponsored by Canimentos, a new local brand of dog food. In the social area, after finally getting a website last year, we are now also on face book, and one of the members of the executive board is managing the information every day. Our Academic Calendar has been as follows: I would like to point out that most speakers have donated their time and expertise at no cost other than travelling expenses, for which we are extremely grateful. This, and our non profit policy, has allowed us to bring prices down to a level where most veterinarians are able to attend. Even so, only around 40 veterinarians assisted each course, except for the one day courses, where more people seem to find the time to come. Date Theme Speaker Organized by 17 – 20 January 2011 Laboratory diagnostics Dr. Cristina Silva (Argentina) Dr. José Antonio Ruiz (México) Dr. Gabriela Chávez (Ecuador) Dr. Daniela Escobar (Ecuador) Dr. Gabriela Villacrés (Ecuador) AMVEPE February and March Evening presentations Various short topics, including clinical experience Ecuadorian veterinarians who volunteered AMVEPE, help of Pfizer 26 April 2011 Gastroenterology and veterinary digestive endoscopy Dr. Jesús Villalobos WSAVA CE program AMVEPE has a few members who have decided to leave mainly due to the system of continuing education credits that are necessary to be a member. However, we believe this system is necessary as there are many associations popping up to organize courses and events, and AMVEPE is looking for something to make a difference. We believe that our CE system will assure that membership will be a sure sign of quality in professional care. There are also some new members about to enter this month. In order to stimulate active involvement of members, a certain amount of CE points can be earned by assisting non educational events organized by the association, and the non attendance of important events such as elections are punished with a fine. Future plans in continuing education: AMVEPE has joined forces with the associations of Emergency and Critical Care, and Orthopedics to organize a major congress with international speakers including Dr. Ettinger, Dr. Jesús Paredes and others. This event will take place in November, and is the main reason that the rest of the year has been a little calm education wise. Organizing between three separate organizations is a challenge, and I hope to be able to report good results in our next year’s report. WSAVA has been promoted by including it’s logo on all the paperwork of courses it helps us to organize, a direct link on our new web page, and the sending on of continuing education possibilities that come from WSAVA. Also the nutrition guidelines have been sent (in spanish) to all our members and educational institutions. This concludes the year 2010-2011 report of AMVEPE, Quito Ecuador. Ellen van Nierop WSAVA representative.
