Ellen Bjerkas DVM PhD Dipl ECVO graduated from the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science in 1972 and worked the first years after graduation in the school?s outpatient clinic. After ten years in private practice she returned to the school to complete her PhD studies. She obtained her PhD degree on ophthalmology in 1991, whereafter she spent a year in USA as part of ophthalmology training. In 1975 she became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ECVO) and is presently Professor at the Norwegian School of Veterinary Sciences.
She is past president of the ECVO and past president of the FECAVA. For many years she has been head of the Nordic Eye Examination Committee, Chief panellist of the Norwegian Eye Panel and member of the ECVO Hereditary eye disease committee. She has been member of the ACOVENE (Accreditation committee for veterinary nurse training) board, member of the EJCAP (European Journal of Companion Animal Practice) sub committee and vice-chairman of the The Legal Advisory Council for Veterinary Medicine, Norway.
Ellen Bjerkas is honorary member of the NSVO (Norwegian Society for Veterinary Ophthalmology) and of the Association Scientific Veterinary Council of Cuba, Pinar del Rio.
Ellen Bjerkas is long-term WSAVA representative for the Norwegian Small Animal Veterinary Association and chairperson of the WSAVA FAC. In 2012 she received the WSAVA President's award.
Ellen is married to Rolf. She has two daughters and four grandchildren.
