The WSAVA Waltham International Award for Scientific Achievement

Urs Giger

The WSAVA Waltham International Award for Scientific Achievement is given to a veterinary surgeon who has had a significant impact on the advancement of knowledge concerning the causes, detection, cure or control of companion animal disorders.

This year the recipient is Professor Urs Giger from the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania, where he is Chief of Medical Genetics. Professor Giger also has a faculty position at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and is a professor at the Veterinary School of the University of Zrich. He is a diplomate of both the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Internal Medicine and heads the Pediatrics and Genetics Clinic, the Josephine Deubler Genetic Disease Testing Laboratory, and the Transfusion Medicine Program at the University of Pennsylvania, thereby providing unique veterinary services. His research expertise and interests are in two areas: firstly, the characterisation of hereditary disorders of small animals, from clinical signs to the molecular genetic defect, and the development of laboratory tests to identify disease-causing mutations; secondly, new methods for diagnosis of haematologic disorders, and their management particularly with transfusion therapy. Professor Giger's research studies have been published in over 200 original and review papers. The WSAVA is honoured to have Professor Giger as a member of the association's Hereditary Defects Committee, and delighted to recognise his achievements with this Award.

The WSAVA Waltham International Award for Service to the Profession

Roger Clarke

The WSAVA Waltham International Award for Service to the Profession is given to a veterinarian for outstanding service in the promotion and enhancement of the exchange of scientific and cultural ideas in the world of small animals. It is no surprise that this year's recipient is Dr Roger Clarke from Australia. Dr Clarke has had a long career in private veterinary practice as a surgical specialist, and is a director of a 14 person veterinary group with four hospitals, a 24-hour emergency centre and surgical referral practice. Roger has served as President of the Australian Veterinary Association, the Australian Small Animal Veterinary Association, the Australian Association of Registered Veterinary Specialists and the International Veterinary Ear Nose and Throat Association. He is a member of the American Animal Hospital Association's Council of 100 and the its Australian International liaison officer. For many years Dr Clarke has served as his country's representative to the WSAVA Assembly. He chairs both the WSAVA Animal Welfare Committee and the WSAVA Committee for Continuing Education in Asia, where his enterprising and tireless work has led to major advances in two of the major aims of the association. Roger is a Churchill Fellow, a Fellow of the Australian Veterinary Association, and a Fellow of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Surgery. The WSAVA Award is a further recognition of his dedication to the profession.

The WSAVA Hill's Excellence in Veterinary Healthcare Award

Greg Ogilvie

The WSAVA Hill's Excellence in Veterinary Healthcare Award recognises the outstanding work of a veterinarian in promoting companion animal healthcare and the Family-Pet-Veterinary bond, through leading-edge clinical nutrition and advanced medical and surgical techniques, aimed at enriching and lengthening the special relationships between people and their pets. Dr Greg Ogilvie, head of medical oncology and director of the Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University, will receive the 2002 Award. Dr Ogilvie is a specialist in both internal medicine and
oncology. He is well known internationally for his views on the importance of compassionate care in the treatment of cancer patients, and is co-author of two books on the subject: 'Managing the Veterinary Cancer Patient' and 'Feline Oncology, Compassionate Care for Cats with Cancer' (Veterinary Learning Systems, 1995 and 2001).
