BRIEF HISTORY OF ASSOCIATION
The Academy of veterinary dentistry is the original certification entity which was founded in 1987 to bring together the various people who were promoting veterinary dentistry. It has since grown to an international association who’s main propose is dental education.

Mission Statement:
The Academy was formed to recognize individuals who dedicate a significant part of their professional activities to veterinary dental practice, instruction or research. The Academy is dedicated to the continued improvement of practice standards and knowledge of veterinary dentistry. We encourage (and offer financial support for) instruction and research in Schools of Veterinary Medicine and share our knowledge and experiences with practitioners through programs in continuing education.

General information

Number of members – 86 total members including 9 honorary/life members
In addition, there are now 5 Equine fellows.

This includes members in the United States as well as Canada, Poland, The United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Israel, and Austria.

Virtually every small animal practitioner in the Unite States performs some level of veterinary dentistry. The AVD’s goal is to further veterinary education worldwide. In addition, the AVD also has an equine certification.
In 2010 AVD added 05 new members.

Election of the new secretary and president elect will occur in November during the AGM: Dr. Niemiec will be installed as President at the end of the Veterinary Dental Forum. He will serve for 2 years.

AVD Board activities:
1. 2010 Meeting was in San Antonio Texas in November
2. Reviewed and updated website
3. Elected “Fellow of the year”
4. Worked with the AVDC in streamlining the application process.

Activity outside the United States

- None previously other than individual members speaking.
- In 2011 AVD is starting a world-wide initiative in conjunction with WSAVA to promote veterinary dentistry on a global scale. This is designed to educate local practitioners in the basics and intermediate levels of veterinary dentistry.
- The AVD will provide the speakers and content for lectures and or wet labs. In addition, AVD will arrange for the necessary equipment and assist the local organizing committee in arranging sponsorship.
- Dr.s Brook Niemiec and Jerzy Gawor will be the contacts for this initiative.

Additional Activity of AVD

- Co sponsor of National Pet Dental Health Month. This reaches virtually every veterinary clinic in the United States
- AVD research grant is awarded annually.

AVD Congress participation

2010 American Dental Forum co-sponsor. The AVD works with the American Veterinary Dental College and the American Veterinary Dental Society to product the annual American Veterinary Dental Forum. In 2010 we had approxiamtely 1,000 attendees. The AVD is responseable for teh intermediate section and organizes all the speakrs for a 2-3 day session.

AVD members also routinely speak at local, national, and international meetings.
